Poker: SCOOP 2012 summary and conclusions

scoop

Well, my SCOOP campaign went pretty much to my original plan, in that I played 4 out of the five I was hoping to play.  I didn’t manage to Satellite into the Medium level events, but was contented to play the Low level events

Events summary

Satellite cost $16.50 took 15 mins
Event entry cost $11.00, took 105 mins, return $0

Total cost $27.50 and 2 hours time investment

Satellite cost $9.90 took 58 mins
Event entry cost $0, took 90 mins, return $0

Total cost $9.90 and 2.5 hours

Satellite cost $5.50 took 64 mins, return $8.00
Event entry cost $27, took 315 mins, return $45.81

Total profit $21.31 and 6.25 hours

Satellite cost $37.50 took 4 mins
Event entry cost $0, took 360 mins, return $154.89

Total profit $117.39 and 6 hours

Total profit for all events $101.30 and 16.75 hours

Was it worth it ?

From a purely financial point of view, I earned about $6 (£3.79) an hour which is not all that great from a professional point of view… luckily I am a recreational player,  so am pretty contented just to make any kind of profit across these events Smile

Of course for me there is the excitement and anticipation before the games, I actually enjoy the planning and looking forward to the games element of such a Poker festival… and there is always that allure of a potentially big score… plus the inevitable feeling afterwards that I could have done even better than I did.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable SCOOP this year and was well worth the effort.   Will definitely be playing these events again…. and of course it’s not that long until WCOOP Smile

Poker: SCOOP event #40 NL Hold’em (Main Event)–low

scoop

My final SCOOP game of the season is the big one… the Main Event !

With the direct buy-in at $109, I was always planning to only play if I could satellite in… however it was not in my planning to play a 6 seat hyper-turbo STT !   It was a bit of a impulsive decision, as happened to see it when I was generally looking, but anyway decided to give it a spin.  To my surprise and delight, 4 minutes later  I had secured my seat for only $37.50 Smile   Was a complete luck-box really, but that’s the nature of hyper turbo format, and why I don't normally play them!   I’m not complaining and will take any luck I can get

Onto the main event itself.  We play 40 levels Sunday night, then the survivors reconvene on Monday evening to contest for the big prizes.

We start with 15’000 chips and 15 minute levels, so hope to get through at least the three hour late registration.   If I get to the end of level 40, it will be around 5:30am… hmmmm, hoping I will get there of course, but may be tricky to do any work afterwards!!

At the start there are 13’000 entrants and 1710 places paid… something to aim for Smile

Dealt QQ early and got re-raised.   Sat and thought, player count got down to 3153 whilst I let my timer tick down and I was nearly folding, but under pressure decided to 4 bet all-in.  Of course villain has A-A so insta-calls and hits Full House on flop…. dammit !!

Ended up 3’141 out of 22’128 entrants and got $154.89 for my trouble…. but thought I’d completely buggered it up…. I really should’ve folded !!

Really pleased and relieved I min cashed, as was really telling myself off for being so stupid to not fold and just be sure to get the min-cash for my nights work.    It worked out OK in the end as it happens, and was probably my first major mistake of the night, but even so I should’ve known better.

Poker: SCOOP event #38 (low)

scoop

Its my big weekend of SCOOP this weekend.  With my limited previous success, I am hopeful to do better this time… (perhaps the sign of a sick gambler Smile )  HORSE is first this weekend and the third from four chances to get a deep run according to my plan.

We have 8 minute levels and 5000 starting stack as before, fingers crossed I can do better this time !

Poker: SCOOP event #31 8-Game (Low)

scoop

Following on from my previous SCOOP event, this is the event I have been looking forward to the most from my planned events, as 8-Game is my favourite Poker variant at the moment, and have had previous success.

My good fortune started out by my winning my $27 ticket in my first 8-Game satellite for only $9.90, so a good start :)

The event itself has 8 minute levels and 5000 starting chips, rotating between the 8 games each level as normal.

First hand I have great draw and hit good hand on first draw, get action from one player but sadly he rivered the nuts and I've lost 10% of my stack already !   Not quite the start I was looking for....

Next level is limit Hold'em and call raise with KK planning to fold to A on flop, but flop comes AA2 so decide it's more likely I'm ahead, especially when villain raises my bet.   After calling down to river, villain shows A-Q obv :)

Things steady up and make a recovery and feel I'm playing OK, but then at dinner time, get a bit distracted and get over excited on the NL Hold'em round with AdKd and two diamonds flop, dropping a large portion of my stack when I miss...

After that, with the blinds going up, it's a case of finding a good spot to commit.  Sadly in Omaha HiLo I 3 bet then see 4 bet and two callers in front of me.... in some ways I'm happy to get good value, but the flop completely misses me but have to stick the rest in and am out

Poker: SCOOP event #22 Mix NLHE/PLO

scoop

At last, my SCOOP campaign has kicked off !

I was originally planning to play  Heads Up NL Hold'em (Event #7) on 8th May, but that day we went up to London and didn’t get back in time…. so tonight's Mix NLHE/PLO (Event #22) was the first game for me

The starting stack was 5000 and with 15 min levels, there is a lot of play to look forward to, but sadly I didn’t even make the end of late entry Sad smile

The simple reason was that I decided to play tight/solid and was basically not getting any hands.   Won a hand in level 3,  but didn’t play many hands and there were only three big hands I played… my A-K<A-T took a chunk out my stack, then in PLO I played a decent hand against big stacked aggro player who bet every street with one pair… shame I also only had one pair in the end, despite having a decent set of draws.    The last big hand was my exit hand on NLHE when my A-K<9-9… wasn’t even a sweat as flop came 9-Q-6

Overall I think the few hands I played were played right, so although a bit disappointed, not that worried.

Summary of my (lack of) progress shown with end of level stats:

Poker: Home Tourney–May 2012

PokerChips

What started out looking like a poor turnout ended up being the best of the year so far with 13 players.  Martin made a rare but welcome appearance and brought along a friend which added an air of uncertainly to the proceedings

As ever, I seemed to be on the sensible table, as Sean was on the other table and Bill wasn’t playing Smile     It started out OK enough anyway, as I made a couple of hands and got to around 3500 from the 3000 starting stacks.   It all started going wrong when I checked the BB with T-8o and four of us saw the 8-4-3 flop.  Although it looked OK for me, I checked and saw the 6 turn for free.   Deciding to bet, only the new boy Cliff called me from SB and I think he bet out the blank river, which I decided to call… only for him to show 4-3o to take the pot Smile

Andy then started to get rolling as he was calling raises with pretty much any two and then started to hit flops hard.   It seemed Jon was always on the receiving end as well, so much so it became comical… but Andy was the one laughing as he had a huge bucket load of chips (and Jon was among the highest buy-ins!)

My fortunes were a bit up and down before the break, as I needed two double buy-ins but then hit a hand and doubled up, getting me to around 3500 chips on the break.   The other table had seen a whole load of buy-ins (mainly from Sean ‘all-in with any’ Smile )     Average chips were around 4.7k, but on my table we had Andy on about 15k and everyone else relatively short.   The other table had a huge amount of chips!

Once we restarted, play settled down a bit, but as the blinds started to go up Andy got going again.    Martin had been playing tight but aggressive, and stuck his chips all-in but Andy called…  I can’t remember the exact hands, but am sure it was pretty much all over for Martin on the flop and he was out first man down.

On the other table, Derek was getting busy and did a double bust out, so we lost Karen to the other table and were playing 5 handed but it was to last as Lee, who was our short stacked bounty, shoved… Cliff called, but then Andy shoved all-in.  After a brief dwell Cliff called.  I think Lee had something like JJ, Cliff Ax and Andy A-Q   I think an A came but the end result was certainly that Andy won the hand and we had our final table!

I seem to remember Alex, Jon and myself were fairly short stacked… Karen was about middle and the rest were relatively large stacked.   (really must start taking notes during the game!!)

Jon struggled to get through the blinds and was very short after having to fold both blinds.   The next time Jon was in SB and I was BB, it folded to Karen who limped, Jon shoved for a small amount more and I looked down at K-Qo and decided to call… and Karen also called.   The Qxx flop looked good for me, so just shoved my 6k into the pot of around 4k…  luckily for me, Karen had Q-J (rather than the feared A-Q when she called) and I took down a big pot, took out Jon, crippled Karen and was on average chips.. phew, certainly a key hand for me.

Being so low, Karen got it in next hand but Jock took her out and the numbers are starting to dwindle.

It was only a matter of time before the Andy stream roller came back to the table, and sure enough Jock was the next victim.   Jock had A-7 against Andy’s K-8….. but although Jock hit his 7, Andy took him out with a K on the river.    As the blinds increased, Derek got in against Andy…. with Derek way ahead with 6-6 against Andy’s A-4 on a 625 board so all the chips went in… the turn was a blank, but then Andy hit his 4 outer on the river to take another player out, leaving just 4 remaining to battle the money bubble.

At this stage, Andy was huge chip lead, I was on around 20k, Darren and Alex were around 10k each

I can’t remember the details now, but I managed to knock out Alex, but then got all-in against Darren with my K-x against 9-8.  Darren hit the 9 on the flop and doubled up, leaving me short stacked.   Despite a valiant effort (even though I say so myself) I got all-in against Andy with my A-7 ahead of his K-8, but of course the first card down on the flop is a K and it’s all over for me in 3rd

There were around 5 hands left, with Darren about 2:1 chip deficit to Andy.    Darren put in a good battling performance, but on the last hand, Andy was way ahead in chips still and should’ve folded for the win… but elected to play.   The betting was very cagey, but bets were going on on every street.  By the river the board read something like K-5-5-J-J and a quick count revealed that Andy had just over 50k left behind… so could still fold for a victory… but elected to go all-in with his A-T which was firmly trounced by Darren’s J-T !!

Despite Andy’s slightly weird play, both had played well to get to that point, so well deserved the top places.    The rest of us have just got to step up our games (and run better Winking smile )

Can’t wait until next months game !!

Poker: Financial results for April 2012

financialChart

Plan

My monthly targets are:
- Play 600 hands of cash on NLHE $0.50 Full Ring, 700 cash hands on PLO $0.50 6-max, all with target of breaking even
- Play 20 NLHE STT hoping for +10% ROI

Monitor

Overall results for the month:-

Pokerstars      :  +$ 67.65
Black Belt Poker:  -$ 21.44 (-£13.19)
Live play       :  -£330.59

My Pokerstars results consisted of 3x STT of 8 game, with 1 cash seeing +$1.95 total profit.  Also played three cash sessions of 8 game.  One session of $2 gave me -$22.46, but the two $4 sessions gave me +$79.84 and +$55.72 profits, so a total of +$113.10.    In preparation for SCOOP, I also played satellites and won seats into Event #40 (8 game) for $9.90 and NLHE Main event for $37.50.   These games are being played in May so something for me to look forward to :)

Rolling 3 month total for 8 game cash is +$206.08

Live play was what my whole month was geared towards in April, the BBP Live event at Aspen Casino in Stratford.  Sadly, not only did I not cash in the tournament, but also dropped £91 in Hold'em cash and £100 in PLO Cash as well.  This makes a total loss of -£330.59.  Luckily this was offset by my 10% stake swap with Jon, so thanks for the good result there Jon :)

My BBP results break down as follows:

Cash results (+£60.21 overall)

NL Hold' em ($0.50)  198 hands   +£  8.68
PL Omaha    ($0.50)  104 hands   +£ 51.53

For the last three months, my cash results are:
NLHE 50    -£0.013 per hand
PLO 50     +£0.014 per hand

Tournament Results (-£73.40 loss overall)

8x MTT            -£  3.44
3x   2 seat STT   +£  5.24
20x  6 seat STT   -£ 54.47
2x  10 seat STT   -£ 20.73

Reflect

I am very happy with my form and results on Pokerstars 8 game at the moment, so plan to carry on and play as much as I can fit in.

For BBP, most of the 6 seat STT was my attempt to qualify for WSOP via the $10 Jackpot STT, which I didn't get anywhere near.   From 18 games I won 2, was second once and third three times (-£63 in total)  I was quite surprised as I play $20 Jackpot STT regularly and normally do well.   I played 2 $20 Jackpot STT just to re-assure myself I could play this format and actually cashed in both attempts, so still perplexed what went wrong.   This gets filed under "seemed like a good idea at the time" and is the one main leak from April's results.   Apart from that, I'm pretty happy with my online game this month.

The live tournament was great fun and glad I went, but not financially fulfilling.   In the main event NLHE I was playing a bit tight/weak to start with, but did accumulate a few chips before my A-A got cracked by 4-3o flopping two pair, putting me down to below starting stack.  I stayed at the same chip level for the rest of the day... until the blinds were such that I was shoving if playing a hand.   On the button with A-8c, the table serial raiser put in a raise and got called by CO.  I decided this was a good spot to squeeze but sadly the raiser had Q-Q this time and it was game over.      After a suitable break (playing Blackjack mostly :) ) I wanted to have a PLO cash game, but they were playing some weird dealers choice combination and went to NLHE instead.   I didn't play too poorly but managed to get all-in with a made str8 and also a flush draw, against two players one with a higher flush draw and the other with trips, only for the board to pair and so decided to call it quits.   After another small rest, went back to the PLO table where they were playing "normal" PLO now.  Had two maniac gamblers to my left, so didn't play many hands and was basically always gonna be all-in if I played a hand (being short stacked)   After dropping one buy-in I settled down a bit and left the table with my second buy-in intact.   Was a fun table to be at and lots of action going on.

Adjust

Looking forward, May will be focussed on Pokerstars SCOOP, so BBP numbers will be a bit low again I expect.   It may be tricky to fit in a live game as well, with a SCOOP game on my normal Casino trip night.

June should be back to my normal Poker schedule.

Performance against 2012 targets

* Keep to my revised Poker Plan
Didn't achieve the numbers for Cash games in April, but was due to focusing on Tournaments.

* Play BBP London Live and UKIPT Brighton tournaments
BBP Live was fun, and am now excitedly looking forward to the next BBP Live event at DTD in August.

* Aim for break even month on month on all cash tables
NLHE near enough, PLO yes

* Use learning tools and resources to learn and improve my NLHE, Omaha and PLO8 cash and tournament play
Am putting in the effort to do some learning, PLO8 is the main worry at the moment but also need to improve PLO as well.

* Avoid entering any BBP grading process !
Managed it this month !

* Win a BBP league :-)
Not doing great in League XIV after seven legs.  Roll on League XV...
